Pot Files for translation

Post by Alanrr »

I have translated a few programs until now, but all the time i ve been using pot files. I was thinking about using the gettext libs to implement the translation. I think the text file is straigth forward, but with some tools, like gtranslator and kbabel, newbies could translate/merge the files easily.
What do you think about the idea???

I think it isn't such a great idea, as using gettext or any other library is going to add a deppendency for a Unix library. This would mean M$ Windows/Mac OS users/... might have a problem running the game, compiling the game or adjusting the game (as it would be another tool requiered for a developer)

Maybe we could write a conversion program?

There are lots of programs out there using gettext and running on mac, windows and *nix systems. (take wesnoth as an example)

"The official GNU gettext 0.13+ and libiconv-1.9+ are win32 ready out-of-the-box" and they even provide prebuild dlls.
